Andrew Deptford, a farmer's son, established his business in 1973. His original contract vegetable planting and harvesting business grew to the stage where up to 4000 acres of Vegetables, Flowers and Herbs were planted annually and up to 1000 acres of Brussels Sprouts were harvested each year. In the early years his business was focused in South Lincolnshire, but now he operates nation-wide, providing machinery and labour for growers. Planting remains a significant part of his business, although Brussels Sprout harvesting has been dropped. The expansion of the contracting business saw the need for Andrew to 'hire in' tractors for his busy periods. 25 years ago the only place to go to get a hire tractor was from a local dealer. Being a pedantic sort of person, Andrew would 'book' tractors well in advance of his needs. Unfortunately dealers were often unable to supply at the booked time because the tractor had either been sold or was broken down. When tractors were available they were often old, unreliable and were NEVER taxed. Due to the unreliability of the hire market at the time, Andrew gradually built up his own contracting fleet to 10 new John Deere tractors. Not all of these were required for the full year, so about 20 years ago he started to offer his tractors out for hire locally. This proved a success and the business has grown to supply tractors and the large range of ancillary equipment detailed in the hire lists. Around 150 'units' are now available for hire and they are distributed throughout the length and breath of the UK. Tractors and Onion equipment have been hired into Europe and Precision Onion planters have been hired and sold into the USA and Africa. Andrew's pedantic nature and attention to detail will not allow him to send out a machine that he would not be happy to hire himself. He will also never 'double-book' a machine, as he knows the frustration and serious inconvenience of being let down. |
